A week before India and Japan meet each other on the ground for the inaugural Suzuki Cup T20I on September 22, BCCI president Mithun Manhas and the Indian men’s cricket team met Japanese Ambassador to India, Ono Keiichi in New Delhi. This meeting celebrated the sporting partnership between the two nations with the one-off T20I set to be played at the Sano International Cricket Ground in Tochigi.

The fixture will create cricketing history as it will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, and officially mark the launch of ‘Sports 75’ – an initiative aimed to boost sports cooperation.

While sharing the photographs on X, Manhas described the occasion as an important milestone for the game’s global journey, as he wrote: “It was a pleasure to meet His Excellency Mr. Ono Keiichi, Ambassador of Japan to India, along with Team India in Delhi today. This is a special moment as cricket reaches a new audience in Japan, and one that reflects the vision championed by Mr. Jay Shah of taking our sport to new territories and making it truly global. We are proud to build on that vision and strengthen cricket’s presence in new parts of the world. The excitement for this historic fixture and the Asian Games is building!”

Furthermore, Ambassador Keiichi also welcomed Team India with a heartfelt message, as he wrote: “Dosti ki Nayi Innings. Delighted to meet BCCI President Mithun Manhas and Team India led by Captain Shreyas Iyer. Looking forward to the Suzuki Cup – India-Japan 75th Anniversary Cricket Match in Sano, Tochigi, Japan on 22 September! Best wishes for the 20th Asian Games.”

The Indian men’s cricket team will be led by Shreyas Iyer and will face Japan in the first ever men’s bilateral T20I between the two nations – a fixture which will hold immense significance ahead of cricket’s grand Olympic return at the Los Angeles 2028 Games.
