India’s left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh led the bowling attack with a three-wicket haul to restrict Afghanistan to 156 runs in their allotted 20 overs in the first T20I against India in Delhi on Sunday.
India opted to bowl first, and Arshdeep finished with impressive figures of 3/19 from his four overs. He removed Sedikullah Atal (13), and later Mohammad Nabi (33) and Rashid Khan (1) to break Afghanistan’s middle-order resistance. His wickets came at important stages and helped India prevent Afghanistan from finishing with a bigger total.
Jasprit Bumrah also made an impact by taking one wicket while conceding 26 runs from his four overs. Axar Patel and Varun Chakravarthy picked up one wicket each, while Nitish Kumar Reddy, Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube were also used by Shreyas Iyer, the captain.
Afghanistan had a difficult start after losing five wickets for 43 runs. Azmatullah Omarzai then played a crucial unbeaten knock of 64 to revive the innings and take Afghanistan to a competitive total of 156/8.
