Amsakarunan and Arjun Begin India’s BWF World Championships Campaign with Dominant Win

India began their BWF World Championships 2026 campaign on a strong note as Hariharan Amsakarunan and M.R. Arjun secured a straight-game victory in the men’s doubles Round of 64 at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi on Monday.

The Indian pair defeated Ireland’s Scott Guildea and Paul Reynolds 21-16, 6-4 after the Irish pair were forced to retire due to a back issue, giving the home contingent a winning start on the opening day of the championships.

After a competitive opening game, Amsakarunan and Arjun raised their intensity in the second game and dominated the Irish pair, closing out the match comfortably. The victory also highlights the growing confidence around the Indian duo who entered the World Championships as one of the country’s key men’s doubles combinations.

The win was also crucial as India hosts the prestigious tournament for the first time since 2009 and the championships has returned to the country after a 17-year gap.

The Indian pair will now look to carry the momentum into the next round where they will face the world No. 15 Korean pair Kang Min Hyuk and Ki Dong Ju, who received bye in the opening round.
