A World Athletics Gold Label Race, the Mumbai Marathon will offer a total prize purse of USD 389,524, attracting the best athletes and amateur runners from across the globe. The race will be flagged off from the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, it added.

Harsh Singh engraved his name in Indian judo history after becoming the country’s first-ever male judoka to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal. The 23-year-old produced a disciplined display to upset Australia’s Joshua Katz in the men’s 60kg final and claim the biggest title of his career on Friday.

In what is his debut appearance at the Commonwealth Games, Harsh showed confidence and maturity against one of the most experienced judokas in the field. Katz entered the final as the favourite, having represented Australia at the Olympic Games and won several Oceania Championships and Australian national titles.

He had also claimed a bronze medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

The gold medal contest remained evenly balanced for most of the four-minute bout, with neither judoka able to find a breakthrough. Harsh stayed patient, defended well and waited for the right opportunity.

With just 41 seconds left on the clock, the Indian made his move. He executed a clean waza-ari, earning the decisive score of the contest. From there, Harsh held his nerve and defended strongly until the final buzzer to complete a famous victory.

The result was one of the biggest upsets of the judo competition. Harsh never looked overawed despite facing a far more experienced opponent. His calm approach and tactical discipline helped him secure India’s second judo gold medal of the day.

The victory also carried extra significance considering Katz’s strong judo background. Both his parents were former judokas, while his father had served as Australia’s national judo coach at previous Olympic Games. Harsh, however, remained focused on his own game and delivered a performance that will be remembered as a landmark moment for Indian judo.

Harsh Singh’s background

Harsh Singh was born on May 24, 2003, represents Delhi, and trains at the Inspire Institute of Sport (IIS), Bellary. He has established himself as one of India’s leading judokas in the men’s under-60kg category through consistent performances in national competitions and selection trials. He has also represented India regularly on the IJF World Tour.

Before his Commonwealth Games triumph, Harsh finished seventh at the 2026 Qazaqstan Barysy Grand Slam and represented India at the 2026 Senior Asian Championships, 2026 Tashkent Grand Slam, 2025 Tokyo Grand Slam, and 2025 Hong Kong Asian Open. These performances helped him gain valuable international experience before winning gold in Glasgow.

Ahmedabad (Gujarat) [India], August 1 (ANI): Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu expressed happiness over the warm reception she received during her visit to the Ahmedabad centre, saying she was delighted to see a large number of fellow Indians gathered there.

Speaking to ANI, Chanu said, “I am truly delighted. I hadn’t expected to meet so many fellow Indians here. It feels like the entire city of Ahmedabad has come here."

She also expressed excitement over India hosting the next Commonwealth Games and said she was preparing herself to deliver her best performance.

“India is set to host the next Commonwealth Games. We’ve been watching the preparations unfold over the past year. I am overjoyed that India will be hosting these games, and I am fully preparing myself to deliver my best performance across all sports disciplines," she said.

Meanwhile,, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Prataprao Ganpatrao Jadhav, has written to the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, on his own initiative, urging that India’s celebrated weightlifter and Olympic medallist, Mirabai Chanu, be considered for the prestigious Arjuna Award this year, according to an official press release.

In his letter, Prataprao Jadhav highlighted Mirabai Chanu’s exceptional achievements and her remarkable contribution to Indian weightlifting. The Minister noted that the athlete from Manipur has created history through her outstanding performances at the Commonwealth Games, bringing immense pride to the nation.

Prataprao Jadhav highlighted Chanu’s remarkable record of winning gold medals at successive editions of the Commonwealth Games and her distinction of being the athlete who won India’s first gold medal on each of these occasions. The Minister also highlighted her exceptional performances in the 48 kg category, including her record-breaking lifts in the snatch, clean and jerk and total lift categories.

Jadhav further highlighted that Mirabai Chanu has already been honoured with several of the country’s highest sporting recognitions, including the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award and the Padma, besides winning an Olympic medal.

However, her childhood dream of receiving the Arjuna Award, which she had nurtured since her early days of training in her village in Manipur, remains unfulfilled.

Urging the Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports to consider her nomination, Jadhav expressed that honouring Mirabai Chanu with the Arjuna Award would be a fitting recognition of her outstanding performances, exceptional talent and invaluable contribution to Indian sport.

Asmita Dey made history at the Commonwealth Games 2026 after becoming the first Indian judoka to win a gold medal at the event. The 23-year-old from Tripura fought back brilliantly to defeat Canada’s Heidi Quach in the women’s 48kg final and script a landmark moment for Indian judo.

Judo has been part of the Commonwealth Games since the 1990 edition in Auckland, and although Indian athletes have won several medals over the years, none had managed to stand on top of the podium until Asmita’s remarkable victory in Glasgow.

The final did not begin well for the Indian judoka. Asmita found herself trailing early after conceding a yuko and then receiving a penalty, allowing Quach to take control of the contest. With the Canadian holding the advantage, Asmita had to fight her way back into the bout.

The Indian responded strongly by increasing the intensity of her attacks and putting her opponent under pressure. Her efforts paid off as she levelled the scores at 1-1 shortly after the halfway stage of the four-minute contest.

Both judokas continued to battle hard during the remaining regulation time, but neither could land the decisive score. With the contest still tied, the gold medal match moved into the Golden Score period, where the first scoring move would decide the winner.

Asmita held her nerve during the sudden-death contest. She launched a decisive attack at the right moment and earned another yuko, sealing a famous victory and becoming India’s first-ever Commonwealth Games judo champion.

The gold medal was a reward for Asmita’s determination and composure. Despite trailing early, she never lost confidence and produced one of the finest performances of her career when it mattered the most.

“I have worked so hard for this. Before this medal, I was unable to sleep in India. I used to stay awake thinking about the fights. Even if my body was tired, I was not able to sleep. I used to feel restless and then wake up for training at 5.30,” Asmita said after winning the Gold medal.

Who is Asmita Dey?

Asmita hails from Belonia in South Tripura and trains at the National Centre of Excellence (NCOE), Bhopal. Born on March 22, 2003, she comes from a humble family and is the daughter of a bicycle mechanic. She initially competed in athletics before taking up judo in 2015 and later joined the Sports Authority of India’s NCOE in Bhopal.

Before winning Commonwealth Games gold, Asmita had already built an impressive record. She won gold at the 2025 African Open in Casablanca, claimed the 2023 Junior Asia Cup title, won silver at the 2023 Asian Open in Kuwait City, bronze at the 2024 Commonwealth Judo Championships and finished fifth at the 2026 Senior Asian Judo Championships.
