New Delhi [India], August 16 (ANI): A special Independence Day edition of the Fit India Sundays on Cycle event was organised at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Sunday, with sportspersons and fitness enthusiasts participating in the cycling initiative. mchezo.life

Boxer Poonam Bisht highlighted the importance of cycling as an affordable and pollution-free way to stay fit. She said people across age groups can easily take up cycling and contribute to the Fit India Movement by taking responsibility for their own fitness.

While speaking to the reporters, Poonam said, “It is a great initiative because cycling is affordable and pollution-free, making it one of the best ways to stay fit. People of all ages, whether young or old, can easily take up cycling. We will truly benefit from the Fit India Movement when every individual takes responsibility for staying fit."

Squash player Yusha Nafees also participated in the event and appreciated the participation of people from different states. She said the government’s efforts to promote fitness across the country were encouraging and urged people to come forward and participate in such initiatives.

“It feels great seeing people from different states participate… I have also been cycling a lot, so it feels really good to be a part of this initiative. The government has made a great effort to promote fitness across the country. I would encourage everyone to come forward, participate, and do whatever they can on their side," Yusha said.

Wrestler Shivanee Pawar, who said it was her fifth ‘Sunday on Cycle’ event, stressed the importance of making fitness part of daily life. She said such initiatives are particularly useful for people who work from home or spend long hours indoors.

Pawar also encouraged the youth to reduce excessive social media use and focus more on physical fitness and healthy activities.

“This is my fifth Sunday on Cycle event, and I believe initiatives like this are very important for bringing fitness into our daily lives, especially for people who work from home or spend most of their time indoors… It is a wonderful initiative to encourage our country and especially our youth to move away from excessive social media use and focus on fitness," the Wrestler told reporters.

Started by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya in December 2024, Fit India Sundays on Cycle is organised by the Sports Authority of India, Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI), Indian Rope Skipping Federation, Yogasana Bharat, Raahgiri Foundation, MY Bikes and MY Bharat.

The cycling drive is conducted simultaneously across all States and Union Territories, including SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), SAI Training Centres (STCs), Khelo India State Centres of Excellence (KISCEs) and Khelo India Centres (KICs). (ANI)

Since Cheteshwar Pujara became superfluous to the Test scheme of things, India have embarked on a furious and frustrating search for a reliable, long-term No. 3. Shubman Gill seemed to be settling into that role after asking for, and getting, that position on the tour of the West Indies in June 2023. But once he was elevated as Test captain last June and moved down to No. 4, India’s hunt has been futile.

Among others, Sai Sudharsan, Karun Nair, and Washington Sundar occupied that slot, with no more than modest success. On Saturday here, a tall left-hander playing his first Test in 21 months finally answered the call with a maiden century that thrust India into the ascendancy.

Seizing his chance

Devdutt Padikkal would almost certainly have warmed the bench for the first Test against Sri Lanka if Sudharsan hadn’t been ruled out with a stress reaction in his big toe. Thrown an unexpected lifeline, the rangy 26-year-old grabbed his opportunity with gratitude and grace, breezing to an unbeaten 131 as India finished Day One of their 600th Test on an impressive 288-2.

Breaking the drought

Padikkal’s stylish composition, dotted by sparkling stroke-production, ended a long barren run; the last Test hundred by an India No. 3 came in September 2024, 35 innings previously, when Gill smashed an unbeaten 119 against Bangladesh in Chennai. As Gill watched from the best seat in the house, Padikkal surged to three figures in just 134 deliveries, indicative of his authority at the crease and his complete mastery of spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and debutant Keshara Nuwantha, expected to be the biggest threats.

India made the most of Gill winning a crucial toss with a consistently strong batting display. Padikkal was the fulcrum around which the day revolved; walking in to join KL Rahul after a mix-up led to Yashasvi Jaiswal being run out, he announced his intentions with a pulled four off his first ball from Nuwantha, determined to build on his fluent 142 not out against an SLC XI in Colombo last week.

Rahul kept his younger colleague excellent company as the two Karnataka boys put on 150 for the second wicket. They looked good for more when Rahul hobbled off the field with cramps all over his body soon after tea. Gill fell cheaply, but just before close, Rishabh Pant fired a few menacing shots across the bow alongside Padikkal, purring along majestically.
