Rohit Sharma might have gone on to establish himself as the best Indian openers again, after his innings of 138 at Lord’s on Sunday, but in a way, someone else deserves the accolades. Yes, indeed. And it is none other than his Mumbai teammate Shardul Thakur. One might wonder why.

Rohit Sharma slams ton with Shardul Thakur’s bat

The simple answer to that is, Rohit Sharma used Shardul Thakur’s bat to slam his 34th ODI ton — first by an Indian batter at Lord’s. And the funniest part in all of this is — Shardul is referred among his colleagues as ‘Lord’ as well. The all-rounder revealed the entire story to Indian Express.

He said, “I am signed with SS bats and Jatin Sareen (owner) has been very kind to send me some excellent piece of willows. Rohit once requested me to give him a couple of bats since he loved them. We all love him and he’s given us so many joyful moments in the game of cricket that denying him the bats was out of question. And today I am really happy that he scored his historic hundred at Lord’s cricket ground using one of my bats,” he said.

It goes without saying, the duo share a hearty friendship beyond the cricket field as well. In fact, Shardul was seen joking about the same during his commentary stint with Sony Sports Network. Upon being asked by co-commentator Vivek Razdan, Shardul exclaimed, “yes, it is indeed my bat. While sitting in the comm box, I have given a start to India, in the form of Rohit.”

Coming back to the innings, this ton comes at a time for Rohit, where there were rumours, that he is being forced to retire. Such was the magnitude of the claims — that BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had to come forward, and clear the air, that the veteran wasn’t going anywhere.

Before Rohit Sharma came into the Lord’s India vs England ODI, there were a few speculations, that he would retire after the match. Even though BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia had confirmed that no such thing was happening, but perhaps the fans were preparing for the worst. Nonetheless, skipper Shubman Gill has refuted all retirement claims now, ending all rumours.

And of course, Rohit also gave a good account of his prowess, slamming 138 from 110, when India were chasing a mammoth 388 against the hosts. Speaking on the entire controversy, Gill said, “We have not had a chance. He has not told us anything. I think it’s probably in the media. Not been in discussion at all.”

“I think the way Rohit bhai faced the bowlers, he was very calm. Most of the time, I was a non-striker, and watching him, he was very calm. In the powerplay, we were talking about whether to go for a hit or not, but we saw that hitting with a new ball is not that easy. And I think the way he faced the bowlers, and the way he accelerated, I think he got close to 60-70 in quick time. So, he was very calm,” Gill said.

Meanwhile, just to reiterate what Saikia had said… “Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team, and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match.” The Lord’s also culminates Rohit’s poor run in ODIs in 2026, where had just one fifty in 8 games. Now perhaps he is back to being at his best.

All’s well that ends well. New Zealand pouched a narrow 1-wicket win against hosts West Indies to clinch the series 3-1 in Barbados, with one match to spare. Chasing only 188, WI bowlers almost managed to defend the puny total, but Mitchell Santner‘s 34 not out scarped them through.

That is yet another series win for the 2nd best ranked team in the world (111) , who have narrowed down the gap between first-placed Indians to just five points now (116); prior to the start of the series it was eight point. That just goes on to show, how consistent Santner’s team has been in the last couple of years.

Starting from Sri Lanka’s tour of New Zealand — the Kiwis won 2-1, followed by Pakistan tri-series, which they won as well. Post that they entered the final of the Champions Trophy, and only lost to India. Then they beat Pakistan 3-0, followed by England 3-0 as well. West Indies were beaten 3-0 too, before they beat India in India 2-1.

The only exception being their last series against Bangladesh — that they lost 1-2. But the side is back on track again, with bowlers picking wickets in clusters, and batters delivering too. So far, the stand out performer for them has been left-arm spinner Jayden Lennox who has picked up 11 wickets in 4 matches, and Michael Bracewell, who has 7 wickets in as many encounters, showing their vast reserves of spin pool.

After being asked to bat first, West Indies batters never looked comfortable at the wicket. At one stage they were reduced to 81/6 in 21 overs. Come the chase, it wasn’t an easy outing for the Black Caps as well. They also were 77/4 at one stage, reminding one and all, that it was a tough wicket to bat on. But Mark Chapman played brilliantly for his 80. Michael Bracewell and Santner too strung a partnership, but once the stand was broken, there was a mini-collapse in the innings. But Santner finished the game with Lennox, nonetheless, who stayed unbeaten on 0 after playing 10 balls.
