Harmanpreet Kaur urges Team India to “take responsibility” against Sri Lanka in Asia Cup final
Dubai [UAE], September 12 (ANI): Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has urged her team to step up and deliver when it matters most as India takes on Sri Lanka in the Women’s Asia Cup final in Dubai on Sunday. tr-sport.click
India have been heavily reliant on their opening pair, with Smriti Mandhana contributing 154 runs and Shafali Verma 168 in the tournament. With the title at stake, skipper Harmanpreet will hope the middle order rises to the occasion and shares the scoring burden in the all-important final.
“We know we have such a good batting line-up, and I think when you have such a good batting line-up, it is only about whoever is doing well on that day," Harmanpreet said as per the ICC website.
“That person should take responsibility and finish the game for the team. I think that is the key on this pitch," she added.
India have found match winners in different players this tournament, which is one aspect that has pleased the captain the most going into the final.
“It is good to see that whoever gets the opportunity is coming up with solid performances," she said. We have managed to get runs on the board, and our bowlers are coming up with some really solid performances. So overall, I’m really happy with the way we have played so far."
Sunday’s final is a repeat of the 2024 showpiece, in which Sri Lanka stunned India to lift the title, and Harmanpreet is bracing for a similarly tough contest.
“I think the last time we played against Sri Lanka, they came up with some really solid plans and performances. Winning in T20 cricket is all about who plays better cricket on the day," Harmanpreet said. (ANI)

GCL: Ganges Grandmasters seal final berth despite losing to PBG Alaskan Knights; Alpine APL Pipers’ fate hangs in balance
New Delhi [India], September 12 (ANI): Ganges Grandmasters advanced to the finals of the Global Chess League (GCL), in Bengaluru on Saturday, despite losing to PBG Alaskan Knights, while Alpine APL Pipers will have to wait for the final league match to know their fate after the defending champions went down against Triveni Continental Knights.
Both Alpine APL Pipers and Ganges Grandmasters went into the final round-robin matches with 18 match points, and a win against teams who were at the bottom of the standings would have been enough for them to ensure a final berth, as per a press release.
However, two-time champions Triveni Continental Kings threw the race to the final wide open as they became the first team in Season 4 to win both matches against the Pipers, winning 11-6 in the first match of the day.
Their loss meant that Ganges Grandmasters needed to score just one game point against PBG Alaskan Knights with black pieces to advance to the final on better game point score.
That target was achieved with Ian Nepomniachtchi drawing against Viswanathan Anand on the icon board and Stavroula Tsolakidou defeating Nino Batsiashvili to put the Grandmasters ahead.
But Player of the Match Abhimanyu Mishra got the better of Luke Leon Mendonca in 32 moves on the prodigy board, and Grandmasters’ Leinier Dominguez Perez lost on time in a time scramble when he knocked off a few pieces while trying to play fast.
Earlier, Alpine APL Pipers looked on course in the first few minutes of the match before Aravindh Chithambaram began tightening the noose around Vidit Gujrathi’s white king. Despite the time scramble in the endgame, Aravindh managed to convert the position and won the match in 36 moves.
But it was Alireza Firouzja who ultimately put the brakes on Piper’s march as the Frenchman forced world number one Magnus Carlsen to resign after 49 moves. This was Carlsen’s first loss in the competition and Firouzja’s first win for Firouzja, keeping alive his team’s hopes of at least making it to the third-place play-off.
Volodar Murzin’s win over Pranav V on the prodigy board meant that Pipers at least scored six points and kept their chances of making it to the final alive.
It was a good game, and after a sharp opening I found some good moves, and when we went through time trouble, I managed to put pressure and win the game. As a team, we played very well today and made it difficult for them to win (the title) for the second time," said Firouzja.
FYERS American Knights can pip the Pipers for the final spot if they beat CheQ Mumba Masters in the final league game and score at least nine game points. (ANI)

Chaminda Vaas joins Delhi Capitals camp ahead of IPL 2027, set to replace Munaf Patel

Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Chaminda Vaas is set to join Delhi Capitals as their new fast-bowling coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. According to Sportstar, the 51-year-old has already joined the team at its preparatory camp and trials in New Delhi, but the franchise is yet to make the official appointment.
Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the Indian Premier League 2026 with seven wins and seven losses under captain Axar Patel and head coach Hemang Badani. Notably, the JSW Group, one of the franchise’s co-owners, will take full administrative control and make significant changes to the team’s backroom setup.
Chaminda Vaas Joins Delhi Capitals in New Delhi
According to Sportstar, Chaminda Vaas has joined the Delhi Capitals camp in New Delhi. The former Sri Lanka pacer is involved in the team’s preparatory camp and pace trials as the franchise begins assessing its bowling options ahead of the IPL 2027 season.
Vaas is set to replace Munaf Patel as Delhi’s fast-bowling coach, although the franchise is yet to officially confirm the appointment. His experience in working with fast bowlers is expected to help Delhi build a more consistent pace attack after a disappointing bowling campaign in IPL 2026.
Chaminda Vaas Brings Vast International and Coaching Experience
Chaminda Vaas was one of Sri Lanka’s leading fast bowlers during a career that lasted more than a decade. He played 111 Tests and 322 ODIs for Sri Lanka, taking 355 and 400 wickets, respectively. He was also part of the Sri Lankan team that won the 1996 ODI World Cup.
The left-arm pacer was known for his accuracy, swing and ability to extract movement even from batting-friendly pitches. After retiring from international cricket, Vaas moved into coaching and has worked with the Sri Lankan national team as well as several franchise teams.
His experience in developing fast bowlers will be a key addition to Delhi’s coaching staff. Amit Mishra has also joined the camp as the franchise’s new spin-bowling coach. Mishra is one of the most successful bowlers in IPL history and will work with Delhi’s spin department ahead of the new season.
Delhi Capitals Complete Major Coaching Overhaul After IPL 2026 Struggles
Delhi Capitals have made major changes to their coaching setup after missing the playoffs in IPL 2026. They also struggled at home, losing five of their seven matches at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, including a 75-run collapse against Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
Delhi finished the season with three consecutive wins against Punjab Kings (PBKS), Rajasthan Royals (RR) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) after being eliminated from playoff contention.
KL Rahul scored 593 runs at a strike rate of 174.41, including one century and five fifties. Lungi Ngidi led the bowling attack with 13 wickets, but Delhi managed only 64 wickets throughout the season, the joint-lowest tally in the league.
The franchise has replaced Hemang Badani with former India captain Sourav Ganguly as head coach, while Yuvraj Singh has joined as assistant coach. Amit Mishra and Chaminda Vaas will oversee the spin and pace departments, respectively.
