From a school hobby to Asian Games gold: Prithika Pradeep’s remarkable journey

What began as a casual school hobby in Standard IV has now turned into an Asian Games gold medal for 18-year-old Prithika Pradeep.
The youngest member of India’s women’s compound archery team, Prithika played a crucial role as the team defeated top seeds China 238-234 in the final, matching the world record in the process.
Born in Tamil Nadu, Prithika moved to Pune with her parents and younger brother. Her introduction to archery came almost by chance. As part of her school curriculum, students had to take up an extracurricular activity for an hour after classes. umafrika.club
“I just liked the name archery and had no idea about the sport,” she said at the mixed zone. “I told my mom and joined the archery team.”
That simple decision eventually turned into a professional sporting career.
Prithika is currently pursuing a B.A. (Hons) in Economics through a distance degree course at DY Patil College, but her primary focus remains archery. Her achievement has also brought plenty of excitement among her school friends.
“My school friends found out about my participation in the team and we were thrilled,” said the young archer.
Alongside experienced campaigner Jyothi Vennam Surekha and Chikitha Taniparthi, Prithika showed remarkable composure throughout the knockout stages. India produced a dramatic comeback against South Korea in the semi-final, edging them 234-233 before putting together a near-flawless performance against China in the final.
For Prithika, having Jyothi by her side has been an important source of confidence.
“She (Jyothi) is like a leader and calms us down in practice and even during the match,” said Prithika. “She has so much experience and we learn from her.”
Prithika is also the first member of her family to take up professional sport. Her father works in the automobile industry, while her mother is a mathematics teacher at a school.
From simply liking the sound of the word ‘archery’ as a schoolgirl to standing on the Asian Games podium at just 18, Prithika has not only found her calling — she has also begun a new sporting chapter for her family.

The Indian Cricket Team became the first to win back-to-back T20 World Cup titles earlier this year, and the first to win the tournament three times.
Then came the IPL, where the entire Indian team played. The Sri Lankans then hosted Afghanistan for one Test match and three T20Is, winning them all comfortably. Then came the disastrous two T20Is against Ireland, both of which the Men in Blue lost, resulting in their first-ever series loss to the Irish.

IND Vs SL Asian Games Cricket Semi-Final 2026 Korogi Sports Park Pitch Report
The ground at the Korogi Sports Park is traditionally a baseball pitch, which was converted to accommodate cricket earlier this year, specifically for the 2026 Asian Games cricket competition. The stadium, in the limited T20 cricket that has been played here. While only non-Test nations have played on this ground before the Asian Games, the pitches here are very typical for T20S, which means they are conducive to batting. On a fresh surface, the ball travels nicely to the bat, making run-scoring easier. The spinners do make things a little more interesting in the second innings. So, in the games where teams of equal quality face off, after winning the toss, a team would usually decide to bat first and put up a decent total.

“Dream of Asian Games gold fulfilled”: Sonali Shingate after meeting Maharashtra CM Fadnavis
Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], September 30 (ANI): Indian kabaddi players Sonali Shingate and Aslam Inamdar expressed happiness after meeting Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis following the team’s gold medal-winning performance at the Asian Games 2026.
Sonali Shingate, who was part of India’s women’s kabaddi team that successfully defended its gold medal at the continental event, said the achievement fulfilled a long-cherished dream after years of setbacks.
“I competed in 2018 and won a silver medal at the Asian Games. I had hoped to compete again in 2023; I was even selected for the team, and my dream was to win gold for the country. However, I suffered an injury at the last moment in 2023 and had to drop out of the squad," Shingate told ANI.
" But when I prepared for the 2026 Asian Games—returning to the training camp and making the team—we finally won the gold. It is a moment of great pride for me; the long-held dream of winning an Asian Games (Asiad) gold medal has been fulfilled, and I am overjoyed… Finally, I competed in the Asian Games, which was a wonderful experience," she added.
Shingate said the gold medal was a special moment after overcoming challenges and making a comeback to the national squad.
Meanwhile, men’s kabaddi player Aslam Inamdar said Chief Minister Fadnavis congratulated the team warmly and assured them of his continued support.
“He congratulated us warmly and was delighted—especially since we are from Maharashtra, so his happiness was certainly justified. He assured us of his 100% support for the future, encouraging us to keep winning medals while promising to stand by us," Inamdar told ANI.
The men’s team produced a 40-34 victory, while the women’s side edged past Iran 37-34 to successfully defend their gold medal. Since the debut of the sport in men’s team competition at the 1990 Asian Games, India has won gold at nine out of ten editions, except for a bronze medal finish in the 2018 edition in Australia. Women’s kabaddi was introduced in the 2010 edition, and since then, India has been among the medalists there too, having won four gold medals and a silver. (ANI)
