ENG vs PAK 2026 1st Test: England skipper Joe Root was leading his side in Test cricket for the 66th time as the home team looked to dominate Pakistan on Day 2 of the 1st Test at the Headingley in Leeds on Thursday. Root continued from where he left off on the opening day after another delayed start due to rain, nothing up his 68th fifty in Test cricket in his 167th match.

Root’s half-century equalled the incredible world record held by Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar in Tests. Only Root and Tendulkar now have 68 fifties in Test cricket so far. In addition to 68 fifties, Tendulkar also notched up 51 centuries – the highest-ever in the format.

The England skipper in comparison has 41 Test tons to his name while scoring 14180 runs at an average of 50.64. Tendulkar holds the record of being the highest run-scorer in history of Test cricket with 15921 runs in 200 Tests at an average of 53.78. amunra-online.pl

Root brought up his 68th Test fifty on Day 2 before being dismissed for 66 off 112 deliveries. His innings included 10 boundaries.

Former West Indies batter Shivnarine Chanderpaul is third in the list with 66 fifties, while former Australia captain Allan Border and India’s Rahul Dravid have 63 half-centuries each.

Here are the top 5 batters with most fifties in Test cricket…

Name Country Runs 100s 50s
Sachin Tendulkar India 15921 51 68
Joe Root England 14180 41 68
Shivnarine Chanderpaul West Indies 11867 30 66
Rahul Dravid India 13288 36 63
Allan Border Australia 11174 27 63

Root (42) also moved up in the list of 50-plus scores as captain in Tests, placing him fifth ahead of former West Indies skipper Clive Lloyd. Former South Africa captain Graeme Smith leads the chart with 61 fifties, followed by Ricky Ponting (54), Border (51) and Pakistan’s Misbah-ul-Haq (43).

The England captain put on 150 runs for the third wicket with debutant Jordan Cox to take the hosts into the lead on the second day. Cox looked set for a maiden Test ton before being bowled by Pakistan left-arm spinner Ali Usman for 73 off 100 balls with 14 boundaries.

Root was dismissed in the very next over after Cox, falling leg-before to Khurram Shahzad for 66 off 112 balls with the score at 202 for 4. Harry Brook then put on 120 runs for the sixth wicket with all-rounder Dan Lawrence, who was making a comeback into Test cricket.

However, Brook fell short of his maiden Test hundred at his home ground in Headingley for the second year in a row, bowled by Ali Usman for 91 off 93 balls with 13 fours to his name. Lawrence was also dismissed by Usman, caught behind for 51 off 79 balls with 9 fours.

Pakistan’s Ali Usman completed his maiden five-wicket haul in his second Test, ending Day 2 at 5/92 in 23 over. England went to stumps at 366 for 8 with an overall lead of 195 runs.

Earlier, Pakistan were bowled out for 171 in their first innings after England won the toss and opted to bowl. Ollie Robinson and Josh Tongue starred with the ball, claiming five wickets apiece. Robinson finished with 5/51, while Tongue returned figures of 5/46.

‘Kuldeep Yadav knows pressure is on him, nature of pitch in Colombo will determine whether…’, says Russel Arnold ahead of 2nd Test | EXCLUSIVE

IND vs SL 2026 2nd Test: Kuldeep Yadav has only played in 19 Tests in his career since his debut more than nine years back. Now one match into the two-Test series against Sri Lanka and even after winning the first game by a massive 165-run margin at Galle, Kuldeep Yadav’s berth is once again in question.

The 31-year-old chinaman bowler is facing the heat heading into the second Test at the Sinhalese Sport Club (SSC) ground in Colombo from Sunday. Kuldeep is under pressure to retain his place in the playing 11 with left-arm spinner Manav Suthar claiming a 10-wicket haul in only his 2nd appearance in Test cricket.

The left-arm wrist spinner, who will be turning out for Lucknow Super Giants from IPL 2027 after his trade from Delhi Capitals, has managed to pick up only 4 wickets in 2 Tests in 2026 so far. On a turning track in Galle, he ended up pick up only 1 wicket while bowling only 25 overs in the entire game – 14 in first innings and 11 in the second.

Former Sri Lanka batter Russel Arnold, however, believes that it is natural for one spinner to be under-bowled when the home team were bowled out so quickly and with India having three slow bowlers in their ranks.

Arnold, speaking to select media ahead of 2nd Test in Colombo, admitted that Kuldeep Yadav will be under pressure in a question posed by India.com.

“Of course, you will feel the pressure. Even as individuals, when you don’t perform, you are critical of yourself. So he will be carrying some baggage and it’s harder for him, because he’s watched the other two spinners go and bowl and pick up wickets,” Russel Arnold told India.com about Kuldeep Yadav in an exclusive interaction.

The 52-year-old former Lankan batter turned out in 44 Tests and 180 ODI matches in international cricket. He scored 1821 Test runs at an average of 28.01 and 3950 runs in ODIs at an average of 35.26.

Arnold believes that Indian captain Shubman Gill made the right choice by selecting Kuldeep Yadav, who has claimed 80 wickets in only 19 Tests at an average of 23.36, for Galle Test. “The captain needs control. A wrist spinner, you expect him to go for a few more runs and in Galle, it was the right decision to go in with two finger spinners. If things get tougher, then you have the variety of Kuldeep. Any captain would think that way,” Arnold said.

“India bowled out Sri Lanka very quickly in both innings, so there were no long spells on offer. When you go in with three spinners, one spinner is always going to be unhappy,” he added.

The former Lankan southpaw believes the pressure will be on Kuldeep Yadav in Colombo but wasn’t sure that off-spinner Saransh Jain will make it to the playing 11. “Kuldeep is a senior player and he has been around for a long time. He’s a match-winner and hence the pressure is on him. I don’t see it as a concern.

“Sarash Jain is an off-spinner and it will be interesting if India want that variety. It will depend upon the pitch at the SSC in Colombo. If the pitch is flatter and stays truer for longer period, then you will need Kuldeep and his variations to pick up wickets,” Arnold felt.

‘India can afford to carry Yashasvi Jaiswal’

Apart from Kuldeep Yadav another Indian player struggling for form has been opener Yashasvi Jaiswal. After a sensational start to international cricket, Jaiswal has only managed one fifty in his last 8 Test innings.

While his opening partner KL Rahul notched up 82 in the first innings of the Galle, Jaiswal only had scores of 32 and 0. But Arnold believes with other Indian batters like Rahul, Devdutt Padikkal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant in form, Indians can afford to ‘carry’ an out-of-form Jaiswal for some more time.

“If he (Yashasvi Jaiswal) is having a dip in form, India can carry him because the others are performing. And as we discussed earlier, Sri Lanka really didn’t push India. But then, on the other hand, India is a place where you have some quality players, whoever comes in performs, there are many others knocking on the door,” Arnold said about Yashasvi Jaiswal.

“But is it a concern? Not really. I think he is a quality player and sometimes you go through these ups and downs,” Arnold added.

Asked about possible changes in the Lanka playing 11 with star batter Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Mendis and Dinesh Chandimal ruled out, Arnold said, “Well, for Sri Lanka to make changes, again, the pitch plays a part. The only change I can see is whether they go in with one seamer, leave Lahiru Kumara out and bring Ramesh Mendis in so that the two spinners can bowl in shorter spells and stay fresh.”

BFI reopens Asiad selection, Sumit Kundu loses 70kg spot to Deepak Punia

Shadab Khan | Antigua and Barbuda Falcons

The last 24 hours have been crazy. I played a game yesterday, then travelled back to Islamabad before making the long journey here. I arrived around four and then played another game, so I think I’m still in a bit of jet lag. I’m not really sure how to describe it.
