Very pleased. Look, the most important thing is we got the win tonight against a very good team. And it probably wasn’t the best of starts for us in the first five games, but we said to ourselves, forget about that and focus on the next five, and we’re two for two. It’s a great night, and to come here and win, it’s a huge confidence from the boys.

Madrid [Spain], August 27 (ANI): Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho hailed star striker Kylian Mbappe for his hat-trick against Real Sociedad, saying that he is someone with a lot of hunger to make history with Spanish giants.
Mbappe’s hat-trick helped Real Madrid crush Real Sociedad 4-1 in their La Liga match at their home arena of Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. This marks their first win of the season at home and their second win in two matches. The Jose Mourinho era continues undefeated for the Spanish giants, who would be eyeing redemption after two dry seasons without any major titles.
Speaking after the match on Mbappe, as quoted by Real Madrid’s official website, Mourinho said, “I do not like comparing players, but this guy is incredible. I am really happy that he made history in the World Cup because there are 25 world champion players, but only one is eternal in football: the player who has the most goals in the World Cup (Mbappe became the top-scorer by leapfrogging Lionel Messi and won the Golden Boot)."
“He’s made that history, but I see him with a lot of hunger to make history with Real Madrid. But despite Kylian having done what he did, it is hard for me not to talk about the team because it has always been a team effort. In the first half, with the difficulties we faced, the team knew how to wait, stay calm, and be compact. Then, in the second half, it shifted into a higher gear. Maybe the inspiration of training with the noise of cars in Madring made him shift into one or two gears higher. I really liked the second half," he added, hailing the collective team effort.
Denzel Dumfries, along with Mbappe, Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Jr, was a part of the starting line-up for Real Madrid. In the first half, there were chances at both ends, with Mbappe, Vinicius and Mikel Oyarzabal of Sociedad all being denied, as per Goal.com.
A wide strike from Sergio Gomez made it seem like the first half would be drawless, but the match came to life in the final five minutes of the first half.
Mbappe struck to make it 1-0 in the 40th minute, sending his opponent the wrong way after a pass from Federico Valverde. Four minutes later, Luka Susic produced a gentle equaliser, taking the scoreline 1-1 into half-time.
Mbappe later combined with Bellingham to make it 2-1 in the 60th minute. Vinicius also struck, making it 3-1 in the 68th minute, before Mbappe completed his hat-trick in the 80th minute to make it 4-1. Brahim Diaz’s strike could have made it 5-1, but his goal was ruled out for offside. (ANI)

Grand Chess Tour Finals: Praggnanandhaa draws second classical game, still in deficit against Caruana
St. Louis (Missouri) [US], August 27 (ANI): Indian grandmaster R Praggnanandhaa secured a draw in his second classical game of the Grand Chess Tour (GCT) title clash on Wednesday, but his opponent Fabiano Caruana still enjoys a six-point lead.
The young Indian grandmaster had lost his first classical game to Caruana 6-0, but managed a draw in the second classical game, 3-3. With the end of the classical games, Praggnanandhaa trails 3-9, but has rapid and blitz rounds to make a comeback and win the title.
Final: Caruana 9–3 Pragg
Fabiano Caruana won the first classical game, earning 6 points. The second classical game ended in a draw, giving both players 3 points and leaving Fabi with a 9–3 lead heading into rapid and blitz.

Praggnanandhaa suffered a setback in the opening classical game of the 2026 Grand Chess Tour Finals, losing to Fabiano Caruana as the American took a 6-0 lead in their title match on Tuesday (local time)
Praggnanandhaa had held his own through much of the game and navigated an unusual opening setup to reach a complex middlegame. However, a costly one-move error on the 28th move allowed Caruana to seize the advantage and convert it into victory, according to Chess.com.
The result handed Caruana six points under the scoring system being used in the final, putting the American in a strong position ahead of the second classical game. Praggnanandhaa, meanwhile, will need to recover quickly with only a limited number of games remaining in the match.
The opening phase produced an unconventional version of the Italian Opening, with both players adopting setups that challenged traditional opening principles. Caruana reached a middlegame featuring a bishop against a knight, but the position did not offer him a clear advantage initially.
The American GM was required to play accurately to maintain stability before Praggnanandhaa’s 28…Rc8?? proved decisive. The move overlooked a tactical opportunity and resulted in the loss of material, after which Caruana was able to bring the game to a winning conclusion.
Caruana’s victory was particularly significant as it ended a long wait for him to win a classical game at the Grand Chess Tour Finals. The American had not won a classical game in the competition since the event was introduced in 2018, although he has only participated in the finals three times, in 2018, 2025 and 2026. (ANI)

IND vs SL 2nd Test: As hosts hang on, India’s spinners need to be bang on

India will be the first to admit that they lucked it out at the SSC ground on Wednesday after weathering a tempestuous storm whipped up by Pasindu Sooriyabandara and Kamindu Mendis on the penultimate day of the second Test.
Trailing by 213 and being asked to follow on by Shubman Gill after being bowled out for 290, the hosts came out all guns blazing, embracing attack as the best form of defence. That paid off handsomely; even though openers Lahiru Udara and Kamil Mishara perished with 63 on the board, Sooriyabandara, primarily, and Mendis set about the Indian bowling with gusto, rendering them toothless on a surface that played a lot truer than anticipated.
Ravindra Jadeja
At various stages during the bruising third-wicket stand of 115 (110m, 172b), India were chasing their tails. Negative lines and several men patrolling the boundary ropes proved no deterrent to Sooriyabandara, in only his second Test, as he used the sweep of all variety — conventional, paddle, slog and reverse — with devastating effect when he was not chipping down the track and driving through the straight field. But India stormed back after tea to reduce the hosts to 229 for six, a mere 16 ahead, and will eye a 2-0 sweep on the morrow if the rain stays away.
Mendis, whose batting has fallen off after he reached 1000 Test runs in only 13 innings, took his team finding his feet but once he got his eye in, he matched Sooriyabandara stroke for stroke. The result was a dazzling passage of play with Manav Suthar and debutant Saransh Jain at the receiving end, Ravindra Jadeja alone providing control.
Saransh Jain
India heaved a huge sigh when Mendis fell against the run of play, reprising his dismissal of the first innings with a pull against Prasidh Krishna superbly pouched by Gill running backwards from mid-wicket. Dhananjaya de Silva’s arrival at the crease strangely compelled Sooriyabandara to go into his shell and it was always on the cards that when one wicket fell, a couple would follow.
That’s what happened once de Silva was unfortunately caught at gully as he whipped the ball on to his pad, from where it lobbed to Devdutt Padikkal. When his captain was in the middle, Sooriyabandara (92) added just eight in 50 deliveries and the pressure told as he charged Suthar, who smartly threw the ball wide for Rishabh Pant to complete a stumping. Niroshan Dickwella’s dismissal meant Sri Lanka had lost three wickets in 34 deliveries, with India primed to move in for the kill.
