AMSTELVEEN, NETHERLANDS – August 18: South Africa’s campaign at the 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup hit a challenging hurdle on Tuesday, as a clinical Indian side secured a 6-1 victory in their second Pool D encounter at the Wagener Hockey Stadium.
Following an opening defeat to England, South Africa entered the match eager to establish a foothold in the tournament. While the team showed moments of promise and persistence, India’s tactical precision and efficiency in front of goal ultimately dictated the rhythm of the game.
India, ranked ninth in the world, signalled their intent early and opened the scoring in the 11th minute through Sunelita Toppo. Despite South Africa’s attempts to disrupt the momentum, India doubled their advantage in the second quarter when Navneet Kaur converted a penalty corner. Sushila Chanu added a third before the halftime break, leaving South Africa with a significant deficit to overcome heading into the second half.
The third quarter saw India’s attacking unit find further success. Deepika struck in the 38th minute, followed by quick-fire goals from Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana, extending the lead to 6-0 by the 45th minute.
To their credit, the South African side never conceded the competitive spirit. Throughout the match, individual efforts, particularly attacking runs from the likes of Onthatile Zulu and Ntsopa Mokoena, constantly tested the Indian defence. This persistence was finally rewarded in the 55th minute when Kayla de Waal found the back of the net from a penalty corner, securing South Africa’s first goal of the tournament.
Reflecting on the match, the scoreline illustrates the punishing nature of top-tier international hockey, where defensive lapses in transition are quickly exploited. While the result is a difficult setback for the team’s World Cup ambitions, the goal-scoring breakthrough provides a small but necessary positive point of reference for the squad.
