Al Ahly were held to a 1-1 draw against hosts Ceramica Cleopatra on Tuesday evening, in the opening round of the Nile Egyptian League title-deciding phase.
Ceramica Cleopatra took the lead in the 41st minute through South African forward Fagrie Lakay, who unleashed a long-range effort that goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir dealt badly with before ending up in the goal.
Al Ahly pushed for a response and eventually found the equalizer in the 82nd minute. Defender Yasser Ibrahim capitalized on a clever backheel assist from Achraf Bencharki following a corner kick, firing the ball into the net to level the score.
The closing moments were filled with drama, as Al Ahly players appealed for a penalty in the 94th minute due to a handball inside the box. However, after a VAR review, the referee decided to wave play on in a highly controversial call.
With this result, Al Ahly remain third in the standings with 41 points, while Ceramica Cleopatra sit fourth with 39 points, as the title race continues.
