Swys on his shock exit: It’s not about money
Swys de Bruin has opened up about his sudden resignation as Springbok Women head coach.
Speaking exclusively to Netwerk24 on Friday, De Bruin dismissed reports that he had quit following a dispute with SA Rugby over bonuses owed to him.
The former Lions head coach said his resignation had been in the pipeline for some time and was simply held back from announcement until after the Bok Women’s clash with the Black Ferns at FNB Stadium on Saturday. ipltable.lol

“Let me put it very simply, it’s not as big a story as it’s being made out to be. I submitted my resignation a long time ago,” De Bruin said.
“There’s really nothing funny about it, I’m just moving on. For me it’s a new season. It’s not a case of me having a psychological setback or there was a dispute about money.”
TEAM: Bok Women move on without Swys
De Bruin took charge of the Bok Women as high-performance coach in August 2024, going on to guide the team to a first-ever World Cup quarter-final last year.
Laurian Johannes-Haupt and Franzel September, De Bruin’s former assistants who led the Bok Women in Fiji and at the African tournament in Kenya, will continue as co-coaches, Saru confirmed on Thursday.

A new era begins for Newlands
The rebrand follows the recent launch of the Western Province Cobras franchise identity, with both moves tied to a four-year deal that sees YesPlay become title sponsor of both the stadium and the team, brokered by MegaPro. The ground will now be formally known as YesPlay Newlands.
The new logo combines the silhouette of Table Mountain with an oak leaf, a nod to the venue’s famous oak trees, using a colour palette drawn from Newlands’ greens and Western Province’s heritage colours.

WPCA says the identity was designed to feel timeless rather than lean on traditional sporting imagery, aiming to sit alongside global hospitality and lifestyle brands while retaining the character long associated with the ground.
Alongside the rebrand, WPCA confirmed a series of venue upgrades already under way or planned, including upgraded hospitality suites with motorised retractable awnings, new lift infrastructure, additional wheelchair seating, a new secondary scoreboard, and upgrades to the sound and evacuation systems.
Food and beverage kiosks will be refurbished, while player and match official facilities will see improved changing rooms, a scorers’ enclosure and net practice areas. The President and Oaks Pavilions have also been repainted.

The improvements arrive ahead of a busy season at the venue, which will host WP Cobras, the Proteas, MI Cape Town, and touring sides including Australia, Bangladesh, India Women and England, alongside SA20 fixtures.
WPCA chief executive Corrie van Zyl said the association wanted to strengthen Newlands as a year-round destination while continuing to invest in the matchday experience. President Johannes Adams described the ground as more than a stadium, calling it part of Cape Town’s identity.
YesPlay chief executive Tebogo Makamo said the sponsorship was about creating new experiences and memories at the venue, rather than simply attaching a name to it.
