Ikitau, Suaalii return for Wallabies

Wallabies stars Len Ikitau and Joseph Suaalii have been named in Australia’s squad for their two-Test tour of Argentina after recovering from injury. mieszalniakolorado.pl

Ikitau missed Australia’s two-Test series against Japan with an ankle injury, while Suaalii was sidelined for the second match because of a hamstring issue.

Both centres have now been included in Les Kiss’ squad for Tests in Argentina on 29 August and 5 September.

The new Wallabies coach has opted for continuity after Australia’s impressive start to his tenure, with the team beating Japan 35-32 in Osaka before producing a 56-17 rout in Townsville.

“As coaches we’ve looked to maintain consistency in selection with the bulk of this squad having laid a solid foundation over the past few weeks, through their hard work and connection on and off the field,” Kiss said.

“Touring Argentina presents another tough challenge for us as a new group and it’s one that we know will require us to go to another level as we continue to look to build and develop our game.”

There is no place for fullback Jock Campbell, despite the Reds star being regarded as one of Australia’s leading outside backs.

Tom Wright is the only specialist fullback retained in the squad and is in line to earn his 50th Test cap during the tour.

Lock Miles Amatosero was unavailable for selection because of suspension.

Former Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has landed a new rugby union gig, having spent this season as an assistant coach with rugby league club the Sydney Roosters.

Cheika will return to the Waratahs as head coach for the 2027 Super Rugby Pacific season.

The 59-year-old previously guided the club to their maiden Super Rugby title in 2014 before taking charge of the national team later that year.

He remained Australia coach until 2019 and has since coached Argentina and the Leicester Tigers.

Cheika will replace Dan McKellar, who stepped down in June, with the Waratahs confirming that he has signed for the 2027 season with an option for 2028.

The Waratahs finished eighth in the 2026 Super Rugby campaign and missed out on the playoffs.

Cheika said he was excited to return to the club where he enjoyed the biggest success of his coaching career.

“The NSW Waratahs have always occupied a special place for me,” Cheika said.

“It’s my home state and I feel ready to return as their head coach ahead of an important year for the Waratahs and also for Australian rugby in the lead-up to the home World Cup.”

Cheika said winning the 2014 title remained a special memory, particularly the connection with the Waratahs supporters.

“Being involved in the NSW squad that lifted the Super Rugby trophy in 2014 is something I will never forget, especially the passion and energy of our supporters,” he said.

“This is a new time, a different time and I am looking forward to being able to enjoy those same kinds of feelings and more with players, their families and all the fans in this new adventure.”

Cheika also outlined his immediate ambition after returning to Sydney.

“I want to make the Waratahs a great place to play footy,” he said.

DAKAR, Senegal, Aug 18 – Former Arsenal and France captain Patrick Vieira has been appointed as the new head coach of the Senegal men’s national team.

The 50‑year‑old replaces Pape Thiaw, who was sacked in the wake of the country’s last‑32 exit at the 2026 Fifa World Cup.

Born in Senegal’s capital Dakar, Vieira will now manage the country of his birth, having moved to France aged eight before later winning over 100 caps for Les Bleus and lifting the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000.

Senegal’s football federation (FSF) said the appointment reflects its “desire to strengthen its high-level technical staff” and is “perfectly aligned” with the nation’s sporting ambitions.

Details of Vieria’s contract and his starting date in the role are still being discussed.

His first matches in charge of the Teranga Lions are expected to come next month in qualifiers for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon).

Vieira joins the West Africans after he left his role as Genoa head coach by mutual consent last November, with the team bottom of Serie A.

He won eight and drew nine of his 26 games during the 2024-25 season to guide the Italian club to safety and a 13th-place finish.

However, he left the club after managing just two wins in 25-26, with both of those victories coming in the Coppa Italia.

During his playing career, midfielder Vieira won three Premier League titles and four FA Cups at Arsenal, as well as silverware with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Manchester City.

He retired in 2011 and became the manager of New York City in 2016 before returning to Europe with Nice and leading them to seventh in Ligue 1 in his first season.

Vieira was sacked in December 2020 and became Crystal Palace manager the following year, guiding the Eagles to 12th in the Premier League and the FA Cup semi-finals in 2021-22.

He was dismissed in March 2023 after a 12-game winless run, before joining RC Strasbourg as their first appointment following a takeover by BlueCo, the company which owns Chelsea. He left Strasbourg by mutual consent in July 2024.

His predecessor Thiaw was at the centre of controversy in January when he ushered his Senegal team off the field when Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty in the 2025 Afcon final.

The players eventually returned after a delay of about 17 minutes before Brahim Diaz’s penalty was saved and Pape Gueye scored an extra-time winner.

However, Morocco were declared the winners of the tournament in March when the a Confederation of African Football appeals board overturned the result of the final following Senegal’s walk-off.

Senegal have lodged an appeal against that decision with the Court of Arbitration for Sport – with the case due to be heard on 8 October.
