Edmond Tapsoba: “I never imagined staying long at Bayer Leverkusen”

Burkina Faso defender Edmond Tapsoba has said that he never imagined staying this long at Bayer Leverkusen.

The Ouagadougou born Tapsoba started his career at Salitas before making the journey to home club, US Ouagadougou, spending two seasons.

His first European move came in 2017 when he joined Leixões Sport Club but struggled to make an impact before joining Vitoria de Guimaraes.

The 27-year-old signed for the Bundesliga club from Guimaraes in 2000 and is now in his sixth season at the BayArena.

Speaking to OmaSports TV, the central defender expressed mixed feelings.

Tapsoba joined Leverkusen from Vitoria Guimaraes

“To be honest no, no because I was putting my mind like becoming a best player or something. I always have in my mind that everything can be good and everything can be bad.

“A player can come and leave after one year, not because they were so good but they are not counting on them so I [had on my mind that] I was just living the recent moment and let’s see what happens next year so thank God I’m still here,” Tapsoba told OmaSports TV.

Tapsoba agreed to a five-and-a-half-year contract with Bayer Leverkusen for a fee of €18 million plus €7 million in add-ons.

For this Bundesliga season, he has made 24 appearances, scoring five goals with two assists to his name.

Tapsoba played four matches with one goal as the Stallions suffered a round 16 exit at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations following a 3-0 defeat by Ivory Coast in January.

World Cup: “Andre Ayew has a lot to offer Ghana squad” – Lee Addy

Former Ghana international Lee Addy has told Panafricafootball.com, NAC Breda forward Andre Ayew will be a good addition to Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Andre, 36, joined the Dutch Eredivisie side for the rest of the current campaign after his contract with Ligue 1 side Le Havre expired last season.

The former Swansea City attacker joined as a free agent to boost the club’s fight against relegation.

The four time African champions have named experienced Portuguese manager Carlos Queiroz as head coach for the mundial.

With Ghana’s World Cup journey rocked by injuries to key forwards like Mohammed Kudus and Ernest Nuamah, Lee Addy believes Andre Ayew has qualities to offer the senior team.

Andre Ayew joined NAC as free agent

“Yes, because he has a lot of things to offer the national team, leadership qualities,” Lee Addy told Pan Africa Football.

“He is someone who can motivate the younger ones [because] I’ve been a victim before and me seeing Stephen Appiah, John Mensah, John Paintsil, Eric Addo, Hans Sarpei on television and seeing them one-on-one motivated me a lot to bring out my best.

“So I think Andre Ayew has a lot of things to offer the national team this time around.”

Andre, who currently plays alongside fellow Ghanaians Kamal Sowah and Denis Odoi, has made 13 appearances with a goal to his credit.

Ghana is paired alongside Panama, Croatia and England for the World Cup to be hosted in Canada, USA and Mexico in June.

Two newcomers the Springboks must consider

At the end of March, some of the Springboks’ worst fears were realised when powerhouse lock RG Snyman was confirmed to have suffered an ACL knee injury that is likely to rule him out for the majority of the year.

Considering Lood de Jager is also recovering from a serious injury, all at a time when Rassie Erasmus had already flagged a lack of depth of lock, it does lead to a question of who might step into the void.

Veterans such as Jean Kleyn, Salmaan Moerat and Franco Mostert can offer further second row cover in addition to regulars such as Eben Etzebeth and Ruan Nortje, but it may also be the perfect time to look at some newcomers.

Who could the Springboks consider?

Earlier this year, Erasmus cast his net wide as he included 11 uncapped players for the team’s first in-person alignment camp of the year in Cape Town on Wednesday.

However, one player that was surprisingly overlooked now deserves some overdue recognition.

Towering Stormers lock JD Schickerling has been consistently impressing for the Stormers for quite some time, and the 30-year-old’s lineout prowess should certainly be catching the eye of the Springbok coaches.

While Schickerling certainly seems capable of adding value to to the Springboks, there is also no doubt that powerhouse Northampton star JJ van der Mescht would bring real physicality to the forward pack.

The giant lock is probably a frontrunner to remain part of the Springbok set up during the Test season, and so the national coaches should feel relatively comfortable that the injuries to some regulars has also opened up opportunities for other exciting newcomers.
