Report: Sam Darnold is expected to miss time, MRI under review
Signs continue to indicate that Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold suffered a major injury during Wednesday's season opener.
After undergoing a CT scan and X-Rays on Wednesday night, Darnold underwent an MRI on Thursday morning that is under review, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports. Darnold is expected to miss some time, but Schefter reports the team believes it "dodged a bullet." sport-ipl.my
Darnold was sacked on the fifth play from scrimmage in Wednesday night’s game and came off the field with a visible limp. He was examined in the sideline medical tent before going up to the locker room for further evaluation. He was then transported to a local hospital to undergo a CT scan.
Head coach Mike Macdonald said postgame that Darnold did not suffer a fracture, which was positive news.
Drew Lock played in Darnold’s stead and helped lead Seattle to victory. Second-year QB Jalen Milroe is also on Seattle’s 53-man roster.
The Seahawks will be on the road to face the Cardinals in Week 2.
Sam Darnold Injury Updates: What We Know About Seahawks QB's Hip Issue
Seattle Seahawks fans, breathe. While Sam Darnold will likely miss at least one game due to a hip injury he suffered in the team's Wednesday night season opener against the New England Patriots, an MRI has determined that Seattle's starting quarterback "dodged a bullet" and shouldn't miss an extended period of time, NFL Media reported on Thursday afternoon. Darnold hobbled off the field after being sacked on Seattle's opening drive on Wednesday night and didn't return. The Seahawks later announced that Darnold sustained a hip injury and wouldn't return, with backup Drew Lock stepping in and helping Seattle pull off a come-from-behind 13-10 victory over New England. After the game, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald revealed the team was "able to rule out a fracture" regarding Darnold's hip. In what was a rematch of Super Bowl LX, which the Seahawks won 29-13, Lock finished with 187 passing yards, one passing touchdown, no interceptions and a 113.3 passer rating, while completing 72.7% of his passes (16 of 22). If Darnold misses time, Lock would presumably become Seattle's starting quarterback, with second-year signal caller and 2025 third-round pick Jalen Milroe serving as the backup quarterback. Lock has made 28 starts over his seven-plus-year NFL career (2019-present), most recently making five starts for the New York Giants in 2024. Seattle's next two games are road tilts against the Arizona Cardinals (Sept. 20) and Washington Commanders (Sept. 27). The 29-year-old Darnold is in his second season with the Seahawks. Last year (2025), Darnold earned his second consecutive Pro Bowl nod, throwing for 4,048 yards, 25 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, while posting a 99.1 passer rating and completing 67.7% of his passes in a 14-3 season for Seattle.
French FA accuses Infantino of ‘seriously damaging’ football as it withdraws support
‘Image and unity’ of game affected, FFF president says
It will consult sacked former Fifa official Kevin Lamour
The French Football Federation’s president, Philippe Diallo, said Gianni Infantino had “seriously damaged the image and the unity of football” as he announced the end of France’s support for the Fifa president’s re-election.
The FFF’s executive committee unanimously voted on Thursday to withdraw its backing, which had been formalised at the end of June. Diallo referred to “events during the World Cup” which had “flagrantly gone against the way we believe our sport should be run” and to Infantino’s World Cup sell-off plan, which was revealed in July and scrapped after a widespread backlash.

We live in a world eager to issue commands about all the things we need – chief among them money, not one we often contest. But it is unarguably the case that the world’s resources are bountiful enough for every person in it to live in comfort and luxury … if only our species was pleasant enough to deem that essential.
The problem is that for some people, it’s not about having, but about having more. Take Manchester United, for example: we’re currently being told that they need to be in the Champions League because the financial disadvantage of being out of it is so extreme that it’s impossible for them to compete with the clubs that are involved.

Brook, Lawrence and Smith miss out on centuries
Ollie Robinson takes two wickets in first over
Friday is the only sold-out day of this third Test but whether that translates into a full house at Edgbaston remains to be seen. Much like the series itself, the contest is long since over, set in motion by Pakistan’s howling collapse on the first day and then compounded by England’s ruthlessness on the second.
Although for all that England’s march to a 3-0 clean sweep seems a formality, there should in theory be a fair chunk of cricket for ticket-holders to enjoy. Joe Root’s men are eight wickets away from enjoying a weekend at leisure, with Pakistan, set to resume on 52 for two, still 268 runs away from making them bat again.
