Zverev holds off Shelton to win US Open title

New York, USA: Alexander Zverev held off Ben Shelton to win the US Open on Sunday, capturing the second Grand Slam of his career just months after winning the French Open.

Zverev expunged the bitter memory of his 2020 US Open defeat, when he was two points from victory before falling to Dominic Thiem in five sets.

The 23-year-old Shelton was one month shy of his first birthday when Andy Roddick hoisted the 2003 US Open trophy in the last major triumph for a US man.

Hopes were high that Shelton could end the drought after his epic five-set quarter-final victory over defending champion Carlos Alcaraz, and a come-from-behind win over compatriot Frances Tiafoe in the semi-finals.

But Zverev's all-court excellence proved too much for Shelton, despite the support of a star-studded Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd trying to will the American to victory.

With their backing, Shelton surged in the third set, eliminating the errors that Zverev had ruthlessly exploited.

Serving to extend the set, Zverev fell behind 0-40. Shelton fired long on his first set point but on the second Zverev's forehand volley went wide. Shelton had his first break of the match and they were headed to a fourth set.

Zverev, however, responded immediately and decisively, breaking Shelton in the first game of the fourth set and rolling home.

He lifted his arms in triumph after Shelton fired a serve return long on match point and finally received his own huge cheer from the crowd -- but not before some prompting.

Zverev said he didn't initially realize he'd won because he had lost track of the score.

"I knew I broke him twice, but I thought it was 5-1 instead of 6-2, which helped me in a way, because I didn't really get nervous serving out the match," Zverev said.

"In that moment I was in the zone a lot. I didn't hear noise at all. Then also, of course, when the crowd is loud, it's impossible to hear the umpire, so I didn't hear that she said, 'Game, set, match.'"

Zverev had followed up his French Open victory with a runner-up finish at Wimbledon.

But his New York prospects had looked bleak as he labored through two five-setters to start the tournament.

With this win, Zverev said he might consider himself the best player in the world "right, right now."

"If everyone is healthy, I think Jannik is still ahead."

Very few chances

Shelton had entered to a massive ovation but from the start the sharpness that carried him past Alcaraz and Tiafoe was lacking.

Zverev, with utter calm and a superb serve, quickly asserted his authority with a break in the first game, Shelton double faulting on break point.

Eight games later the American double faulted on set point.

Shelton rallied from 0-30 down to force the second-set tiebreaker, but was helpless as Zverev roared to a 5-0 lead and took a two-sets-to-none lead with a service winner.

Shelton gave it all he had in the third, hitting the deck as he chased one blistering Zverev forehand. Although he capitalized on uncharacteristic errors from the German to extend the match there was no stopping Zverev in the final set.

"I made too many errors when I had the ball there on my strings," Shelton said. "I wasn't amazing attacking on my forehand today. I wasn't great in transition.

"It's not easy," he added. "Playing a guy like him there's very few chances."

Held at venues across Aspire Zone, including the Women’s Sports Hall, Aspire Park and Aspire Dome, the championship featured high-level competition testing athletes’ strength, speed, endurance and overall fitness. The event also attracted a strong public turnout, adding to its vibrant atmosphere.

In the Community category, Erada Al Khor finished first, followed by Unlimited Plus, while Circuit, Storm, Storm Teams and Re-Podium shared third place. Dennis Catana won the Masters category, with Khalifa Al Sabri second and Ragheed Al Ghazzy third.

Erada (Al Hashemi’s) emerged victorious in the National Teams category, ahead of Erada (Legacy), while Erada Al Khor (No Fear) took third. CrossFit Al Ain UAE topped the Teams category, followed by Rig UAE and QHP Coal UAE.

In the RX category, Radouane El Ghadouoni secured first place, with Mosstafa Salhani second and Hamza Mahir third. The awards ceremony also recognised outstanding individual and team performances. Omar Al Hashemi was named Best Qatari Player, while Ammar Al Hussaini received the Spirit of the Games Award. Al Hashemi’s Team was named Best Qatari Team.

Nasser Abdullah Al Hajri, Acting Director General of Aspire Logistics, said hosting the championship reflected Aspire Zone Foundation’s continued commitment to supporting sporting events and strengthening Qatar’s position as a destination for specialised international competitions.

He praised the athletes for their performances and highlighted the strong international participation, noting that the presence of more than 400 athletes from over 40 countries added significant sporting and public appeal to the event.

Al Hajri also stressed the importance of collaboration among the organisers, sponsors and partners in delivering the championship to a high standard. He said the strong public turnout demonstrated growing interest in fitness sports and an increasing demand for sporting events that provide audiences with a complete experience beyond the competitions themselves.

The conclusion of the men’s events was marked by a special ceremony honouring sponsors and partners for their contributions to the championship. Aspire Zone Foundation was recognised as the official sponsor, while Qatar Calendar served as strategic partner, Al Kass Sports Channels as broadcaster and Erada Fitness as organiser. Seashore was the title sponsor.

وتشارك دولة قطر في منافسات الفروسية ضمن ثلاث مسابقات رئيسية، هي الترويض والمسار المتكامل وقفز الحواجز، بواقع أربعة فرسان في كل منافسة، فيما يبلغ إجمالي الخيل المشاركة 10 جياد، جرى اختيارها وتجهيزها بما يتناسب مع طبيعة المنافسات ومستواها الفني.

وتأتي المشاركة القطرية في إطار التحضيرات المتواصلة للمنتخبات الوطنية، حيث عمل الاتحاد على تجهيز الفرسان والخيل وفق برنامج إعدادي متكامل، بهدف الوصول إلى المنافسات بأفضل حالة فنية وبدنية، والاستفادة من الخبرات المتراكمة للفرسان القطريين من خلال مشاركاتهم القارية والدولية.

ويضم الوفد القطري في منافسات الفروسية أكثر من 10 فرسان موزعين على الفرق الثلاثة، بعد خضوعهم لتحضيرات مكثفة خلال الفترة الماضية، شملت معسكرات تدريبية امتدت طوال فصل الصيف، وركزت على رفع مستوى الجاهزية الفنية والبدنية، والتأقلم مع أجواء المنافسات ومتطلباتها، استعدادا للاستحقاق الآسيوي المرتقب.

ويقود منافسات قفز الحواجز كل من الشيخ علي بن خالد آل ثاني، والشيخ فهد بن جاسم آل ثاني، وفالح سويد العجمي، وباسم محمد، فيما يمثل قطر في منافسات الترويض كل من جاسم جهام الكواري وسعود أحمد البوعينين.

ويضم فريق المسار المتكامل محمد جبر النعيمي، وعبد العزيز أحمد المهندي، ومحمد سالم المري، ومحمد ناصر القاضي، حيث يخوض الفرسان منافسات تجمع بين الترويض واختراق الضاحية والقفز، ما يتطلب جاهزية فنية وبدنية متكاملة وتركيزا عاليا طوال أيام المنافسات.

وتنطلق منافسات الفروسية في 21 سبتمبر بمنافسات الترويض للفرق والفردي ضمن المسار المتكامل، قبل أن تتواصل في اليوم التالي بمنافسات اختراق الضاحية، على أن تختتم منافسات المسار المتكامل في 23 سبتمبر بمنافسات القفز للفرق والفردي.

وتدخل منافسات الترويض مرحلتها الحاسمة يوم 25 سبتمبر بإقامة نهائي الفرق والتأهل الفردي، على أن تستكمل منافسات الفردي يومي 26 و27 سبتمبر الجاري.

وتتجه أنظار الجماهير القطرية إلى منافسات قفز الحواجز، التي تنطلق منافسات الفرق فيها يوم 1 أكتوبر، قبل إقامة المنافسات الفردية يومي 3 و4 أكتوبر، لتكون الفروسية من بين الرياضات التي تختتم مشاركتها في الدورة الآسيوية.

وتأتي المشاركة القطرية في آسياد آيتشي - ناغويا بعد فترة إعداد طويلة، حرص خلالها الفرسان على الاستفادة من المعسكرات الصيفية ورفع مستويات الجاهزية الفنية والبدنية، والوصول إلى البطولة بأفضل جاهزية ممكنة، في ظل منافسة مرتقبة تجمع نخبة من أبرز فرسان القارة الآسيوية.

وتتطلع الفروسية القطرية من خلال مشاركتها في الاختصاصات الثلاثة إلى خوض منافسات قوية على مستوى الفرق والفردي، وتحقيق نتائج تعكس التطور الذي شهدته الرياضة في قطر خلال السنوات الماضية، لا سيما في ظل الخبرة الدولية التي يمتلكها عدد من الفرسان المشاركين وقدرتهم على التعامل مع البطولات الكبرى، إلى جانب الدعم الإداري والفني الذي يرافق المنتخبات خلال مشاركتها.

وتعكس المشاركة القطرية في منافسات الفروسية حجم الاهتمام الذي تحظى به هذه الرياضة، في ظل امتلاك قطر قاعدة من الفرسان أصحاب الخبرة والمشاركات الدولية، إلى جانب الاستعداد المبكر للحدث من خلال المعسكرات التدريبية التي امتدت طوال الصيف.

وتمثل دورة الألعاب الآسيوية آيتشي - ناغويا محطة مهمة للفرسان القطريين لاختبار قدراتهم أمام نخبة من المنافسين على المستوى الآسيوي، كما تشكل فرصة لتعزيز الخبرات والاحتكاك بمستويات فنية متقدمة، بما يسهم في مواصلة تطوير رياضة الفروسية القطرية والاستعداد للاستحقاقات المقبلة.

ومن جانبه أكد السيد بدر بن محمد الدرويش، رئيس الاتحاد القطري للفروسية والخماسي الحديث، أن المشاركة القطرية في دورة الألعاب الآسيوية في اليابان تحظى بأهمية كبيرة، مشيرا إلى أن الاتحاد حرص على توفير أفضل ظروف الإعداد للفرسان المشاركين، من أجل الظهور بالصورة التي تليق بمكانة الفروسية القطرية.

وقال الدرويش: نحن سعداء بالوصول إلى هذه المرحلة من التحضيرات للمشاركة في المحفل القاري الكبير ونثق بقدرات فرساننا وبما يمتلكونه من خبرات وإمكانات تؤهلهم لتقديم مستويات قوية ترضي طموحاتنا.

وأضاف: خاض فرسان المنتخبات الثلاثة برنامجا إعداديا متكاملا خلال فترة الصيف، من خلال معسكرات تدريبية ركزت على رفع الجاهزية الفنية والبدنية، وحرصنا بالتنسيق مع الأجهزة الفنية والإدارية على توفير كل ما يحتاجه الفرسان للاستعداد بالشكل الأمثل للمنافسات.

وأوضح رئيس الاتحاد القطري للفروسية والخماسي الحديث، أن المشاركة في قفز الحواجزوالترويضوالمسار المتكاملتعكس اتساع قاعدة الفروسية القطرية وتطور مستويات فرسانها، وقال: لدينا مجموعة مميزة من الفرسان المشاركين، ونتطلع إلى أن يترجموا فترة الإعداد الطويلة إلى أداء قوي ونتائج إيجابية، مع التأكيد على أن المنافسة في دورة الألعاب الآسيوية ستكون قوية في ظل مشاركة نخبة من أفضل فرسان القارة.

وتابع: نتمنى التوفيق لجميع فرسان قطر في هذه الدورة، وأن ينجحوا في تمثيل بلدهم بأفضل صورة ورفع راية قطر عاليا في هذا المحفل الرياضي الكبير.

واختتم الدرويش تصريحاته بالتأكيد على أن العمل الجماعي بين الفرسان والأجهزة الفنية والإدارية يمثل عاملا مهما في تحقيق الأهداف المنشودة، معربا عن أمله في أن تشكل مشاركة الفروسية القطرية في آيتشي - ناغويا إضافة جديدة إلى مسيرة الإنجازات التي حققتها الرياضة القطرية في المحافل الآسيوية والدولية.

وتحظى رياضة الفروسية بمكانة بارزة ضمن منظومة الرياضة القطرية، في ظل ما تشهده من تطور مستمر على مستوى إعداد الفرسان وتطوير الخيول، إلى جانب المشاركة المنتظمة في البطولات الدولية والقارية، الأمر الذي أسهم في تعزيز حضور قطر في مختلف منافسات الفروسية خلال السنوات الماضية.

يشار إلى أن دولة قطر تشارك في دورة الألعاب الآسيوية آيتشي - ناغويا 2026 بوفد رياضي كبير يضم 243 رياضيا ورياضية، ضمن مشاركة قطرية في 26 رياضة و32 اختصاصا، ما يعكس اتساع نطاق المشاركة الوطنية في هذا الاستحقاق القاري.

Juan Bezerra requested to leave Zamalek and accepted disciplinary sanctions, with any sale pending board approval.

The Brazilian winger agreed with club officials to issue a public apology for his absence from training. However, the meeting did not produce final approval for his departure, according to sources.

The source said the club were leaning towards a sale, but the board would review the meeting’s conclusions before making its decision.

Bezerra coordinated his subsequent apology with Zamalek officials as part of the discussions. In an Instagram statement, the winger apologised to the board, coaching staff, teammates and supporters, while confirming his willingness to accept disciplinary action. He also made clear that he still wanted a transfer.

“I have chosen to leave because I believe I now have a great opportunity that may not come again,” Bezerra wrote, describing the opportunity as a “dream” for himself and his family, while thanking Zamalek for their efforts to keep him.

Zamalek’s media chief, Maher Gharib, subsequently told Modern Sport during a TV appearance that the club wanted a package worth $7 million and a 20% sell-on clause.

Gharib said Bezerra would not join Monday’s training session and that Zamalek would not force him to stay against his wishes. The club would announce its position once all requirements were met, he added.

Shabab Al Ahli remain the prospective destination. Just yesterday, Gharib said the White Knights would seek a $6 million transfer fee, but those figures differ from Gharib’s demands today.

Bezerra returned to Cairo on Saturday after his prolonged absence, fulfilling Zamalek’s requirement that he return before discussions over his future, as KingFut previously reported.

The winger joined Zamalek from Ukrainian club Oleksandriya in 2025 on a contract running until 2029. He helped the White Knights win last season’s Egyptian Premier League title.
