India beat arch-rivals Pakistan to win Asian Games cricket gold
Nagoya, Japan: India beat their fierce rivals Pakistan by 19 runs on Saturday to win Asian Games cricket gold after a pulsating final in front of a small but raucous crowd in Nagoya, Japan.
World T20 champions India posted 211-6 in their 20 overs with Abhishek Sharma scoring 61 and Tilak Varma 51 not out, before Hasan Nawaz's valiant 96 saw Pakistan come up just short at 192-6.
The neighbouring countries only meet in international tournaments and on neutral ground because of political tensions and the captains refused the normal handshakes before the match.
Afterwards, the jubilant India players paraded their national flag around the ground.
The clash on a converted baseball field in Japan was new ground for even these bitter enemies and their hundreds of millions of fans who were watching back home on TV.
After India chose to bat, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi announced his intention with back-to-back sixes in a second over from Saad Masood that cost 24 runs.
But the 15-year-old batting sensation fell four balls later for 15.
His opening partner Abhishek reached his fifty off 20 balls to a massive ovation from fans that had brought a touch of South Asia cricket fever to the Far East and Korogi Park Athletic Stadium.
India were aided by some sloppy Pakistan fielding that saw Abhishek dropped twice.
He should also have been run out on 46 when bowler Ahmed Daniyal's throw missed both stumps and wicketkeeper with Abhishek stranded.
After he went for 61, Ishan Kishan fell for 20 as the Pakistan bowlers began to regain control.
When captain Shreyas Iyer also departed soon after for 21, India had been pegged back to 133-5 in the 15th over.
But Tilak Varma hit four sixes and Shivam Dube (27) two more as the pair unleashed a late onslaught, putting on 62 in five overs for the sixth wicket as India soared past 200.

Pakistan's previous best score in T20 internationals batting second was 208-3 against Sri Lanka in Pallekele and they made a good start in search of their record chase.
Sahibzada Farhan (10) and Maaz Sadaqat put on 33 for the first wicket in 3.4 overs.
When Sadaqat went for 23 it seemed that they might fold easily.
Hasan had other ideas, and he began to pick up the pace and bounce of the pitch as he raced to a fifty off 28 balls with five sixes.
He was supported by Saim Ayub and their partnership grew to 87 before Dube struck.
He induced Ayub into a false shot with Washington Sundar gratefully grasping the chance running in from square leg to leave Pakistan 126-4 at the start of the 15th over.
Hasan ploughed on and Pakistan needed 52 off the last three overs when Sundar got Abdul Samad to hit to long-on.
At 168-5 with two overs left, India brought back Jasprit Bumrah and his over cost only 11 runs, leaving an improbable 33 off the final over, bowled by Dube.
Hasan reached 96 and fell off the last ball attempting one last big shot.
His brilliant knock came off 51 deliveries, with seven sixes and five fours.
Sri Lanka took the bronze medal after beating Bangladesh by 63 runs in the third-place playoff.
Adams named new US captain to 2030 World Cup
Los Angeles, United States: United States coach Mauricio Pochettino on Friday named Tyler Adams as his team's captain through to the 2030 World Cup.
Pochettino, speaking ahead of the USA's friendly against Mexico in Arizona on Saturday, said Adams was the logical choice to lead the United States.
"I'm happy to announce and for everyone to know that he's going to be our leader and captain," Pochettino told reporters.
"We've had a very good relationship the last three years and I think he knows what I expect.
"He's a perfect role model for everyone in the way that he can translate the philosophy, the culture and represent (this) amazing country.
"He's the player that can lead the period that we have ahead."
Adams, who plays for English Premier League club Bournemouth, is firmly established as one of the senior players in the USA squad.
The 27-year-old captained the USA at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar under previous coach Gregg Berhalter.
Pochettino named veteran defender Tim Ream as captain for this year's World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Ream announced his retirement from international football earlier this week.
Adams, who will take over the armband for Saturday's game against Mexico, said he wanted to "lead this group into a winning culture."
The midfielder added that he believed he had built greater experience since leading the USA as captain at the 2022 World Cup.
"In 2022, obviously we were a very young team, I think one of the youngest at the World Cup, and although I think I was ready for that role, at the same time I've had the ability to grow on and off the field in the period up to now," Adams said.
"Getting the armband doesn't mean anything to me in being a leader or being different from who I am, I'm going to be the exact same person."
Qatar claims third straight beach volleyball gold at Asian Games
Nagoya: Qatar's Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan cemented their Asian Games dominance on Saturday, defeating Indonesia 2-1 in the men's beach volleyball final to capture a third consecutive gold at Aichi-Nagoya 2026.
The Qatari duo held their nerve in a hard-fought final to add another Asian Games title to their collection, following their triumphs at Jakarta-Palembang 2018 and Hangzhou 2022 and further cementing their place among Asia's elite beach volleyball pairs.
The victory caps a stellar 2026 for Younousse and Tijan, who were named Asia's Men's Beach Volleyball Players of the Year for 2026 and also claimed gold at the Sanya 2026 Asian Beach Games. Saturday's triumph adds another major title to an already remarkable season.
Younousse and Tijan were imperious throughout the competition, topping Group A with a perfect run before powering through the knockout stages. They swept past Iran 2-0 in the quarterfinals and followed that with another straight-set victory over Thailand in the semifinals, setting up the gold-medal showdown with Indonesia.
The latest success further elevates Qatar's standing in Asian beach volleyball and reinforces Younousse and Tijan's reputation as one of the continent's most successful pairs, with an impressive record at major Asian and international competitions.
The pair also made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, winning bronze to secure Qatar's first Olympic medal in beach volleyball. They have since continued to add to an impressive collection of titles and podium finishes on the Asian and international stages.
President of the Qatar Volleyball Association Ali bin Ghanem Al Kuwari said the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 gold builds on the national team's achievements in recent years, praising the high level displayed by Younousse and Tijan throughout the competition.
He added that the latest success would provide added motivation as the team looks ahead to upcoming international competitions, stressing that plans are in place to ensure the team is fully prepared to compete at the highest level and continue delivering titles and strong results for Qatari beach volleyball.
Younousse, meanwhile, expressed his delight at winning the final and claiming the gold, acknowledging that the match was a tough one. He said maintaining focus and playing with a unified spirit were crucial to securing victory and reaching the top of the podium.
Younousse dedicated the achievement to the Qatari people, expressing his pride in continuing to deliver major sporting successes and raise Qatar's flag at Asian and international competitions.
Not-so-brave new world: virtual taekwondo makes Asian Games debut
Toyohashi, Japan: Taekwondo dates back more than 2,000 years, but on Friday at the Asian Games the Korean martial art stepped into a not-so-brave future where nobody gets hurt: virtual taekwondo.
At a gymnasium about a 90-minute drive from the main Games host city of Nagoya, a modest number of spectators watched with a mix of fascination and bewilderment.
Taekwondo officials have billed it as "real-world martial arts meets cutting-edge virtual technology".
Competitors wear a VR headset and motion tracking technology allows their movements to control their in-game avatars.
They have "nodes" on their back, thighs and shins to pick up each bodily action.
Rounds are typically 60 seconds each and matches are a best of three rounds, the two combatants standing within their own play area a few metres apart.
The goal is to aim real-life kicks to the virtual body and head of their opponent to deplete their computerised health bar.
The opponent is physically there, standing on an opposing side, but there is never any real-life contact.
Darren Yap won bronze -- to go with another bronze in the traditional format.
"It was fun playing out there. I had zero expectations," said the Singaporean.
Asked what he could see through the VR headset, he said: "You can see your health bar, your opponent's character, your limbs.
"It's actually quite nice to wear.
"It's a fun way to do sparring and it's a fun way to do taekwondo without the contact."
'Groundbreaking'
Officials say virtual taekwondo is just as athletically demanding as the real thing, but safer.
Governing body World Taekwondo "proudly endorses" it, calling it "groundbreaking".
Sceptics say it is just another type of gaming.
The first world championships were in 2024 in Singapore, but on Friday it arrived at a bigger stage.
One of the differences to the real-life sport is that men and women compete in a mixed category. There are also no weight classes.
"It allows more people to participate in the sport, and I think it's cool that women are able to beat men," said Yap, 22, after losing his semi-final to Vietnam's woman athlete Chau Ngoc Tuyet Sang.
Singapore has become the early home of the sport. Virtual taekwondo appeared at the inaugural Olympic Esports Week in the city-state in 2023.
Silver medallist Chau, who also competes in the real-life format, had mixed feelings about no gender or weight separation.
"One advantage is that you don't have to worry about the difference in weight," the 21-year-old said.
"But one disadvantage is that men and women can have differences in physical strength, and men may tend to be stronger.
"That could also mean that some of the movements are faster than those performed by women."
