أعلن زلاتكو داليتش المدرب الذي قاد منتخب كرواتيا إلى نهائي غير مسبوق في كأس العالم 2018 لكرة القدم، تركه منصبه بعد أيام قليلة من الخسارة أمام البرتغال في دور الـ32 من النسخة الأمريكية الشمالية الحالية.
وقال المدرب البالغ 59 عاما في بيان «إنه الوقت المناسب لوضع حد لهذه المغامرة المذهلة، أغادر وقلبي مفعم بالفخر بعدما ساهمت في أكبر إنجازات كرة القدم الكرواتية عبر تاريخها».
بدوره، قال رئيس الاتحاد الكرواتي لكرة القدم ماريان كوستيتش في البيان عينه «سيظل اسم زلاتكو محفورا إلى الأبد بأحرف من ذهب في تاريخ كرة القدم الكرواتية». ومن المرجح أن يخلفه الدولي السابق سلافن بيليتش الذي سبق له تولي هذا المنصب بين عامي 2006 و2012، وفقاً لوسائل إعلام محلية.

حسم الاتحاد المصري لكرة القدم الجدل الذي أثير خلال الساعات الماضية بشأن مستقبل قائد المنتخب الوطني محمد صلاح، بعد توديع منتخب مصر منافسات كأس العالم 2026 من دور الـ16، مؤكدًا أن نجم الفراعنة سيواصل مشواره الدولي، وأن فكرة اعتزاله اللعب مع المنتخب ليست مطروحة على الإطلاق.
وجاءت تصريحات خالد الدرندلي، نائب رئيس الاتحاد المصري لكرة القدم ورئيس بعثة المنتخب في كأس العالم، لتضع حدًا للشائعات التي انتشرت عقب الخروج من البطولة، بعدما أكد بشكل قاطع أن محمد صلاح مستمر مع المنتخب الوطني، مشددًا على أن وجوده يمثل قيمة فنية ومعنوية كبيرة لا يمكن التفريط فيها.
وقال الدرندلي: “محمد صلاح مستمر مع المنتخب، ولا يمكن الاستغناء عنه، فهو قائد حقيقي.”
وكانت أنباء قد ترددت عقب خسارة المنتخب المصري أمام الأرجنتين بنتيجة 3-2 في دور الـ16، حول إمكانية إعلان صلاح اعتزاله اللعب الدولي، خاصة في ظل حالة الحزن التي سيطرت على الجماهير المصرية بعد نهاية مشوار المنتخب في البطولة.
ورغم الإقصاء، قدم محمد صلاح بطولة مميزة، وقاد المنتخب المصري بروح القائد داخل الملعب وخارجه، وكان أحد أبرز عناصر الفريق طوال مشوار كأس العالم، إذ لعب دورًا كبيرًا في وصول الفراعنة إلى الأدوار الإقصائية لأول مرة في تاريخهم، وهو الإنجاز الذي سيظل محطة بارزة في تاريخ الكرة المصرية.
ويؤكد تمسك اتحاد الكرة باستمرار صلاح أن المرحلة المقبلة ستشهد الاعتماد على خبراته الكبيرة في قيادة جيل جديد من اللاعبين، خاصة مع الاستحقاقات المهمة التي تنتظر المنتخب، وفي مقدمتها التصفيات القارية والدولية والبطولات المقبلة.
ويعد محمد صلاح أحد أعظم اللاعبين في تاريخ الكرة المصرية، بعدما سجل اسمه بحروف من ذهب مع المنتخب الوطني، وحقق العديد من الأرقام القياسية والإنجازات الفردية والجماعية، ليصبح رمزًا لجيل كامل من اللاعبين والجماهير.
ويرى مسؤولو اتحاد الكرة أن وجود قائد بحجم محمد صلاح لا يقتصر على الجانب الفني فقط، بل يمتد إلى دوره القيادي داخل غرفة الملابس، وقدرته على نقل خبراته للاعبين الشباب، وهو ما يجعل استمراره ضرورة في المرحلة المقبلة.

Doha: Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo said he wouldn’t make any decisions about his international future in the heat of the moment, but Portugal’s exit from the FIFA World Cup 2026 seems to have made things clear about his career.

A stoppage-time strike from substitute Mikel Merino sent Spain past Portugal 1-0 in the round of 16 at the Dallas Stadium in Arlington on Monday, and Ronaldo’s last shot at football’s biggest trophy went up in smoke.

“It was my last World Cup, yes, but I’ll now have time to reflect and be with my family. I won’t be making any rash decisions,” the 41-year-old Ronaldo said reports after the match.

“I don’t make decisions in the heat of the moment,” he said.

“I’m sad to be leaving the World Cup like this. I gave it my all, I did my best, and I’m leaving with a clear conscience,” Ronaldo said.

Ronaldo made history in Portugal’s second match - against Uzbekistan - at the 2026 World Cup when he became the first player to score at six editions of the global football extravaganza, before making it a brace 33 minutes later. Ronaldo scored another goal off a spot kick against Croatia in Portugal’s Round of 32 clash, which eventually became his last goal at World Cup tournaments.

It was his 27th match in the FIFA World Cup tournaments since his first finals appearance at Germany 2006.

“It’s frustrating to go out like this, but we can hold our heads high,” added the Al Nassr forward.

“That’s football, that’s the life of a footballer. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. And it has to move on.”

Ronaldo scored his maiden tournament goal against Iran, and helped Portugal reach their first semi-final in 40 years. He went on to play, and score at least one goal, at South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 where he scored a stunning hat-trick against Spain, and Qatar 2002.

Ronaldo has spent two decades being Portugal’s most celebrated footballer, and surely he has been the biggest influence in his country’s run at the global stage.

Prior to his arrival, Portugal have only made it to the FIFA spectacle three times in 76 years since it’s inception, in 1966, 1986 and 2002.

The European powerhouse has made it to every FIFA World Cup tournament since Ronaldo’s arrival, but the fourth place finish in 2006 remains his best run.

His 11 World Cup goals remain a Portugal record, and he sits joint ninth along with Hungary’s Sandor Kocsis and Germany’s Jurgen Klinsmann, but that is nowhere close to the table topper Lionel Messi (21) of Argentina.

Ronaldo, Messi and Mexico’s Guillermo Ochoa are the only players to have played across six World Cups, and the Portugal captain also holds the distinction of being the only player to score in all of them.

He also possesses record for most caps (233) and also holds the all-time men’s international scoring record with 146 goals.

Under Ronaldo, Portugal lifted the 2016 European Championship for the first time, and the Al Nassr skipper relished the accomplishment.

“Before Cristiano, Portugal hadn’t won any titles,” Ronaldo said.

“So, I’m happy. The truth is that the biggest title I won with the national team was in 2016, which for me has the same significance as the World Cup, honestly.

“Therefore, I repeat, I leave with a clear conscience, having done my best, and that’s it. Tomorrow will be a new day, and life goes on.”

“We have to pick ourselves up and carry on,” Ronaldo said after the tournament exit on Monday.

However, only time will tell how long he is willing to do so.

The Tokyo 2020 gold medallist arrives in Monaco after clearing a season’s best 2.27m in Doha last month, his best jump in more than a year, as he continues his comeback following a long spell on the sidelines.

“It’s really good to be back here in Monaco. I have a lot of great memories in this stadium,” Barshim said during the press conference yesterday.

“Last year was really difficult for me, dealing with some very serious injuries. Now I’m finally back, able to put on my spikes and do what I love the most, which is jumping and competing,” the 35-year-old said.

“My legs are a bit more tired than they were 15 years ago, but I’m ready to jump. I feel good,” Barshim, who made the second highest jump in the history, said.

Reflecting on his career, Barshim said he is “lucky to have competed through three generations.”

“When I retire, I want people to remember that I produced high-level performances for a very long time. The longer you perform at the highest level, the more you separate yourself from everyone else,” Barshim said.

Beyond his own performance, Barshim also spoke about his involvement in promoting athletics through his What Gravity Tour, a high jump series designed to bring elite competition closer to fans.

“I’ve been travelling for more than a decade and writing down ideas. I feel like this is the right time to make them happen,” he said.

The series has seen immense success during its previous outings in Doha, Germany and Slovakia, with Monaco set to host the next stop on August 5.

“It’s a show for the people while also giving athletes a World Athletics-certified competition. Hopefully we can attract new fans to the sport we love,” Barshim said.

The men’s high jump at tomorrow’s Diamond League meeting promises to be one of the most competitive events, with a field featuring six athletes who have cleared at least 2.33m in their careers.

The Qatari superstar remains the standout performer on paper with a personal best of 2.43m, comfortably the highest in the field, although his season’s best of 2.27m reflects his gradual return to his usual form.

Among his challengers today, Ukraine’s Oleh Doroshchuk has the best seasonal best mark (2.33m) while Czech Republic’s Jan Stefela also arrives in excellent form with a season best of 2.32m.

Italy’s Gianmarco Tamberi, who famously shared the gold medal with Barshim at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, also returns to Diamond League action following a long hiatus, while Doha meeting winner Matteo Sioli of Italy, Mexico’s Erick Portillo, Jamaica’s Romaine Beckford and American JuVaughn Harrison also add strength to the field.

Among other highlights, the meeting will also features some of the biggest names in world athletics, led by pole vaulter Armand Duplantis, who has set his sights on a 16th world record at his new home stadium after relocating to Monaco.

Olympic 100m champion Julien Alfred headlines a stacked women’s 200m field that also includes Olympic champion Gabrielle Thomas and world leader Adaejah Hodge, promising one of the fastest races of the season.

The men’s 100m is also under the spotlight, with reigning world champion Oblique Seville taking on Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo and world indoor champion Jordan Anthony, promising fireworks at the 10th stop of the prestigious series.
