Aspire Zone Foundation to host sixth edition of fitness championship

Doha, Qatar: Aspire Zone Foundation is set to host the sixth edition of the Seashore Phoenix Games Fitness Championship, organised by Erada Fitness, bringing together a selection of athletes and fitness enthusiasts in a series of competitions that test strength, endurance, speed, and physical performance.

The championship is considered one of the leading annual fitness events, featuring a variety of competitions for men and women across several categories. Participants will test their physical and mental abilities through a series of challenges and workouts requiring high levels of strength, fitness, and endurance.

The men’s competitions will take place from Thursday, September 10, to Saturday, September 12, 2026, while the women’s competitions will be held on Sunday, September 13, and Monday, September 14, 2026. The women’s competitions will be exclusively for women, while the men’s competitions will be open to all. The championship will be held across several Aspire Zone facilities, including the Ladies Sports Hall, Aspire Park, and Aspire Dome, in addition to a dedicated entertainment area for visitors and spectators throughout the championship. Once a vital part of daily life in Qatar, the board game known as Dama fell out of fashion for many years after the introduction of electronic entertainment. Recently, however, efforts to revive the game seem successful, as it is now included as part of the National Sport Day activities, beginning in 2012.

Believed to originate in ancient Egyptian society where it was played only by royals, Dama resembles checkers in many ways. It is played on a board of 64 squares, alternating black and white, with flat disks of two different colors. Usually, these disks are black and white, but for our illustration, they are red and blue. To start, each player places his or her pieces along the second and third rows of the board on opposite sides. Whichever player has white, or for our illustration red, goes first.

Dama

A player can move his or her piece one space forward or one space to either side. You cannot move normal pieces backwards. If an opponent’s piece is in that square with an empty space on the other side, you can jump that piece and take it from the board. If a series of jumps will remove more pieces, you can continue moving until all possible pieces are captured. The rules require players to choose the move that captures the most pieces, and failure to do so forfeits the game.

If a piece reaches the back row of the opponent’s side of the board, it will be ‘crowned’ and earn the ability to move any amount of spaces horizontally or vertically, like a rook in chess, but it can only capture a piece if it can jump a single space and land on an empty space on the other side. The game ends when a player can no longer make any legal moves, often because there are no pieces left on the board.

أكد الروماني رازفان لوشيسكو، مدرب السد، أهمية مواجهة الغرافة، مشدداً على أن فريقه يدخل اللقاء بهدف واحد هو تحقيق الفوز والتأهل إلى المباراة النهائية.
وقال لوشيسكو في المؤتمر الصحفي: «هذه المسابقة تعني الكثير بالنسبة لنا، فالفوز بمباراتين يمنحنا فرصة رفع الكأس، وهو ما يمثل تتويجاً لجهود اللاعبين ويسعد جماهير النادي».
وأضاف: «نحن في بداية الموسم ونريد مواصلة العمل بأعلى درجات التركيز والدافعية، وأن نقدم كل ما لدينا مباراة بعد أخرى، مع استمرار التطور وتحسين الأداء. ندرك أن مواجهة الغرافة تختلف عن مباريات الدوري، ولذلك علينا أن نكون في قمة الجاهزية».

أكد البرازيلي روبرتو فيرمينيو، لاعب السد، أن مواجهة الغرافة ستكون صعبة وقوية، مشدداً على رغبة لاعبي الفريق في مواصلة الانتصارات والاقتراب خطوة جديدة من التتويج باللقب.
وقال فيرمينيو: «إنها مباراة مهمة للغاية في نصف النهائي، ونحن نريد الظفر بالبطولة ونعمل دائماً من أجل تحقيق الألقاب. تركيزنا بالكامل منصب على مواجهة الغرافة، وسنبذل قصارى جهدنا من أجل التأهل إلى النهائي». وأضاف: «الغرافة فريق قوي ومتمكن، وسبق أن واجهناه في نهائي كأس الأمير، ونحن نعرف جيداً قدراته. المباريات أمامه دائماً صعبة وتحتاج إلى جهد مضاعف».

عمرو سراج: لقاء بطابع خاص

أكد عمرو سراج، لاعب الغرافة، أن مواجهة السد ستكون قوية وحماسية، مشيراً إلى أن مباريات كأس قطر تختلف بطبيعتها عن مواجهات الدوري. وقال: «المباراة لها طابع خاص، والسد فريق كبير ويمتلك عناصر مميزة، لكننا سنطوي صفحة الدوري ونضع كامل تركيزنا في هذه المواجهة، ونتمنى أن نكون في أفضل جاهزية وأن نحقق الانتصار ونتأهل إلى المباراة النهائية».

Other notable games include Manchester City visiting Barcelona and Real Madrid entertaining Inter, while last season’s Europa League winners Villa must go to Barcelona and play Dortmund at home, while also tackling Istanbul giants Galatasaray and Fenerbahce.

The latter are appearing in the Champions League proper for the first time since 2008/09 after beating Lyon in the play-offs this week.

New names in this season’s competition are Como, who have upset the traditional order in Serie A, and Sabah, while LASK made it to this stage for the first time after a stunning comeback win over Celtic in the play-offs.

Last year’s Norwegian champions Viking have reached the Champions League proper for the first time too, and they have a glamorous fixture schedule that includes Bayern, Atletico, Villa and Napoli.

This is the third season since the introduction of the new format for the Champions League, with 36 teams now all pooled together in one giant league and each playing games against eight different opponents.

This season’s final will be played at the Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid on June 5, 2027.
